SUBJECT:        Your Input on Library Materials Collections

DATE:              FALL 2009

You are encouraged to collaborate with the Librarians at Austin Community College to select the books, periodicals, audiovisual media, and online databases that will support our students' learning. Your knowledge of subject materials and of your curriculum is vital to the appropriate development of the materials collections.

For purchases this fiscal year, print and audiovisual materials may be requested until March 7.

For print, media materials or for online databases, send requests to the relevant subject bibliographer listed on the Web at http://library.austincc.edu/gen-info/Bibs.htm or give it to any librarian who will then route it for you. Please send any reading or media lists you give your classes to the subject bibliographer in your area.

Librarians purchase media that can be checked out by students, faculty and staff. Circulating items are checked out and returned to the Library Circulation Desk. Librarians also purchase media that can be placed on Reserve for faculty and classroom use. Please contact the appropriate bibliographer for all media requests.

The Growth of Digital Content

ACC Library Services is committed to supporting student learning through the acquisition of current, reliable, and expedient research. Increasingly, this means the purchasing of digital content in the form of e-books, e-journals, and online databases. The information contained in scholarly e-content is as trustworthy as its print counterpart, and often features sophisticated tools such as full-text search, APA/MLA citation help, and the translation of an article into multiple languages with a click of a button. When your students access content via ACC Libraries' web site they are not reaching the sort of unreliable and unsubstantiated information often found via a basic Google search, but rather content from some of the most authoritative names in publishing, including Encyclopędia Britannica and Oxford University Press.

Explore these exceptional academic online resources via Library Services' A-Z List of e-Resources.

Research Guides by Subject

We also welcome hearing of Web pages you use in your courses. We can add them to our "Library Research Guides" recommended by ACC Librarians” http://researchguides.austincc.edu/ These pages developed by the reference librarians also frequently include lists of new books acquired in the libraries.

Remote/Off-Campus Access

You can access the Library catalog from any computer with Internet access via http://library.austincc.edu/ which provides links to the catalog and to online periodical indexes and reference databases. You must use your ACCeID login for access to the indexes, databases, and other licensed online sources. More information about Off-Campus Access can be found at http://library.austincc.edu/help/offcampus.php

We always welcome your suggestions for improving the collections.
