Web Subject Directories

We've talked about how the Web has great information, but it's all mixed in with unreliable, incorrect junk. Subject directories are a way to help find the good stuff.

These are web sites where actual human beings select the "best" web resources and arrange them by topics. Instead of the usual thousands of results with no quality control that you get using a search engine, you get a manageable number of results that are usually higher quality.

These are excellent places to begin research if you have a general topic in mind. The major drawback of subject directories is that they usually use broad subjects but you may want something very specific.

There are many subject directories, but good ones to start with are the Research Guides done by the librarians here at ACC. For each subject there will be a list of recommended web sites (along with lots of other helpful information).
