Truncation lets you insert a symbol (often an asterisk*) at the end of the root of a word to find any words that begin with that root but have various endings.

Truncate a word where you will get useful results. Think of the many words you would get if you truncated opera* to search for opera and operas. Some of these, such as operation and operability, would not be useful at all.
