A quick guide to the way items are shelved in the libraries.

Books and media are shelved according to the Library of Congress (LC) Classification System in the libraries at Austin Community College. In addition, on selected campuses only, health sciences books and media are classified and shelved according to the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Classification System.
Classification systems group items by subjects or topics, e.g., astronomy or Texas law. Hence, books on astronomy would be shelved together in the library under the LC classification, QB, and books on Texas law would be shelved together under the LC classsification, KFT.

You may obtain a printable Guide to the Library Classification System (there are copies in any ACC library) and use this to browse the shelves for material, but remember two things:
  1. You won't see what is available at other campuses or checked out; and
  2. This guide is very general, so many items on a topic might shelved in other places.
Using the online catalog can overcome these problems.
