Can't Find Useful Material

Can't Find Anything Useful in the Catalog?

  • The catalog is literal, matching exactly the terms you enter.
  • Check your spelling.
  • Use keyword searching. It is more flexible.
  • Use truncation.
Add two asterisks ** to the root word (word stem) and you will search all the words that begin with the root. For example: psycholog** will pick up psychology, psychological, psychologists, etc.
  • For Keyword searches, you can try synonyms. Enclose synonyms in parentheses and the computer will search for either term. Example: ( ecology or environment )
You can combine search techniques using "parentheses." Example: (ecology or environment) AND econom**
  • Use fewer terms at a time. Example: If gang violence doesn't work, try just gangs or gang* (With gang* you get ganglia, etc.)
Can't Find Anything???
  • Place the mouse over the bolded words for a definition.
