Searching Techniques

We will explore some basic steps for using the catalog.
To begin:
  • Use the default Quick Keyword option to begin your search.
    OR
  • Choose another search option from the tabs or sidebar.

    >> Move the mouse over the small picture of the Catalog home page below to see a larger image.
Quick Tips
  • Don't type in normal sentences, such as "What are the effects of population growth?"

-- Instead, use the basic keywords related to your topic, for example, population growth.

  • When searching multiple words the system will automatically suppply the Boolean "and" operator between each word; multiple words entered for the search will all occur somewhere in the retrieved records though not necessarily in the order entered. Thus, if you type in child abuse , you would get results that include child sexual abuse or child emotional abuse.
Search for exact phrases by enclosing them in quotation marks. Words enclosed in double quotes will appear together in all results exactly as typed. Example: "child abuse"
  • For keyword searches, you can search for synonyms by using OR. The catalog will search for either word. For example, ecology OR environment.

Need Help?
  • Reference Librarians are available at each campus to help you find information. Please ask for assistance.

  • You can find also specific Search Tips under Other Resources on the sidebar of many catalog pages.
