The Austin Community College District’s (ACC) Library Services is receiving national recognition from the American Library Association (ALA) for its new online tutorials as an outstanding example of information literacy online instruction.

“There are hundreds of information literacy tutorials in higher education and few are recognized as best practices,” says Julie Todaro, ACC dean of library services. “Our literacy team has managed to not only capture content to deliver instruction on required research competencies but also to design unique interactive, online tutorials specific to our target audiences. Research Success, building on decades of successful information literacy training, illustrates the talent of ACC library faculty and the success of partnerships with ACC’s expert classroom faculty.”

The library’s Research Success Tutorials, designed for ACC students and faculty, are bite-sized, interactive modules that break the research process into simple steps. The suite employs engaging graphics, images of ACC students, everyday examples and analogies, and humor to appeal to students. Students can complete each tutorial in 10-15 minutes, and print or email their quiz results to their instructors for proof of completion or course credit. The tutorials are ideal supplements to any research assignment, and can be inserted seamlessly into any syllabus. All of the tutorials are available 24/7 from the ACC Library web site and are accessible from any mobile device.

Currently, it’s composed of seven tutorials:

ACC’s tutorial project is one of only 19 projects in the nation accepted by the ALA’s Association of College & Research Libraries’ Peer-Reviewed Instructional Materials Online (PRIMO) Committee in 2014. The college also is one of only 14 community colleges accepted for the PRIMO Database since its inception in 2001.

The PRIMO committee of experts reviews submissions from academic librarians worldwide and selects exemplary projects to model best practices and showcase effective online teaching for other institutions and developers.
