Earlier in this tutorial we used the exact quote method:
According to an article in the May 2005 issue of the magazine Teaching Elementary Physical Education, “The decline of walking and bicycling is regrettable. Overweight and obesity have reached epidemic proportions among American children …. More than 15% of school-age children are now overweight, a threefold increase in less than 25 years, and the numbers continue to rise.”Here’s an example of using this same research as a paraphrase:
There has been a health cost due the decline in bicycling and walking by children. According to an article in the May 2005 issue of the magazine Teaching Elementary Physical Education, obesity in school-age kids has tripled in less than 25 years and it’s getting worse. The decrease in walking and bicycling among kids is one of the causes.Paraphrasing is often useful because you can pick out the parts of a quote that most directly relate to your points. But remember, you still have to say where you got the facts by using oral footnotes.
