Narrow - General Purpose

Scholars have divided speeches into three groups defined by their common strategies and desired outcomes. These groupings, often called "genres," have been named after the speaker’s goal for the speech and help the speaker keep that goal central to the message. Being clear on what your general purpose (goal) is also suggests the most appropriate strategies to achieve that purpose.

The three genres are:

· Informing
· Persuading
· Entertaining/commemorating
