Scholars, academics, or practitioners in a professional field write journal articles. An editorial board of scholars or professionals in that field reviews articles to decide whether they should be published (this practice is called "peer-review" or "refereeing").
Journal articles report findings of original research and may focus in-depth on a very specific area. Take a look at this chart showing the parts of research article.
