The Role of Research in Creating a Stronger Speech

Any speech, school paper, or even just everyday conversation is greatly improved with research that supports the statements being made.

We’ve all heard someone—including ourselves—make grand statements such as:

“There have been lots of earthquakes in Texas.”

Really? Where did we get that information? It’s much more believable if you can say:

“According to the Handbook of Texas, ‘Between 1847 and 1994 there were more than 110 recorded earthquakes of magnitude three or greater in Texas.’”

The difference, of course, is you did research and found a reliable source.
