This list of benefits includes a wide variety of “plusses” or positives
relating to libraries and partnerships and collaborations. Those reviewing
the list, however, should note the following statements:
-
Not everyone views or values “benefits” in the same way. What is a benefit
to one type of library or in one part of the country may not be a benefit
elsewhere.
-
Just as political agendas, administrations, services and members of the
public change, so do benefits. That is, what works well and what benefits
are realized under one leader, may not work or be realized under another.
-
Projects have “lives,” that is a project may live and be successful and
grow and then the project, activity, service or partnership may die a natural
death.
That said, what are some of the benefits? For purposes of this overview,
the content has been arranged by sections that include the library itself,
the libraries’ umbrella institution and the community or patron/users/potential
users. The reality is that many benefits are the same in each area.
Library benefits (all types of libraries)
-
An increase in the network of library supporters for library activities
and future needs (bond issues, funding battles, legislation, etc.) as well
support for the partnership activities themselves
-
An increase in the information network that increases/improves services
for library/information patrons
-
Visibility for library services/activities as well as visibility for partnership
and collaborative activities
-
Energize library staff with new activities, new recognition, new services
and possible new skills
-
Greater knowledge base of people who “know” what the library is and what
it can do
-
Increased dollars to – for example – increase access for new partners,
expand collections for different patrons, etc.
-
Public relations and marketing opportunities
-
Opportunity to discover and access new and unique collections as well as
increase collection size and design and create new collections and ways
to access
-
Possible increase in staff to handle new arrangements/temporary or permanent
Library Umbrella Institution (cities, countries, academic institutions,
businesses, K-12 environments)
-
Recognition of the variety of roles that libraries play – both traditional
and non-traditional – in the life of the organization as a whole
-
Opportunity to form internal partnerships and collaborations as well as
external roles
-
In higher education - increased enrollment in the institution as families
view higher education as more accessible and “possible”
-
In K-12 environments – the opportunity for staff to learn about, work with
and bring “in” the parents of children as well as to meet them in other
parts of the community and workplace
-
Forming a base to justify local/statewide funding as others view partnerships
as efficient and effective use of money
-
Consistent and effective instruction in 21st century learning/skills needed
-
Opportunity to access unique collections/services and information
Community
-
A smarter, more prepared 21st century citizenry
-
A more knowledgeable patron/potential user who see opportunities in information
environments and maximizes resources
-
A more solidly networked and informed community – everyone now knows what
the others are “doing”
-
Creation of network of people to “make things happen”
The following partnership benefits statements are general and may or
may not specifically include the libraries in the environments. These
