Information Literacy Community Partnerships Scenarios

Scenario I

The IL Community Partnerships Homeville, WA group met in their biannual work session to discuss their progress. They reviewed their documents posted to their website and decided that for now, in the second year of their 21st Century IL program, their vision and mission needed to remain the same and the goals would be assessed for completion. As a group they felt they had accomplished a great deal in the 18 months they had been working together. They had created and had approval from all stakeholder groups on:

  •  Il competencies expected of all Homeville citizens
  • A benefits "plan" for all profit environments for ensuring their employees meet competencies needed
  • A brochure for the Chamber, tourist bureau and for the real estate agents on focusing on 21st century IL citizens  and economic development
  • A series of articles for area publications on their research results indicating 90% correct IL scores on random tests taken by Homeville citizens online, at baseball games, at church and phone surveys

  • Their plans for the next five years include enriching the Homeville IL website, pre and post testing in elementary schools, a look at statistics on Homeville voting, an information literacy summit by high school seniors, and a town meeting by community leaders on shared technology.

    Scenario II

The Large City, MI ILCP Planning Committee met and discussed their first year's activities. They felt their greatest benefit from the ILCP initiative was the "awareness of use of 21st technologies" discussions and subsequent publicity and their identification of IL partners and the increased levels of basic knowledge about the community IL partners and stakeholders. Their activities had included:

  • a series of articles in the newspaper discussing the importance of the use of 21st century technologies and information literacy
  • a general website that provided links to all area e-resources, library catalogs and tutorials
  • a contest among local junior high and high school kids for designing the local/look for the IL website
  • a web weaving of local computer/web design club members for design/serving of the website
  • a media event with a website virtual ribbon cutting
  • a set of standardized instructions for e-resources linked to the website as well as general web/Net searching guides
  • a designation of "Information Literacy Day: 21st Century Skills for a New Generation" for Large City, MI by the city council with certificates of appreciation for their involvement in IL activities presented to local area educational administrators, the director of the library, the area chamber and representatives of other local groups
