Online Magazines

The following are web sites that correspond with regularly printed building and woodworking magazines. Many of these sites provide links to even more web pages regarding their topics.

General Sites

  • Image of an electric drillAsk the Builder
    Nationally syndicated newspaper columnist Tim Carter provides this web page. Using a letter-answering format, Carter provides answers to a wide array of construction and home improvement questions. Older columns are available on a wide range of topics, from Blacktop to Windows.
  • BuildingOnline
    This site bills itself as "hottest building industry search engine ever created." You can limit your searches to particular categories (architects, contractors, distributors, etc.) that cover over 200,000 construction-related web sites.
  • Your New House
    This page serves as a companion to the television program. Although geared to information needed by new home owners (financing information, moving tips, etc.), it also has good sections for do-it-yourselfers and small projects.
  • Construction WebLinks
    Maintained by a law firm that serves the construction industry, this page has links to a wide range of construction-related sites. The focus is on building codes, regulations and state agencies.

 

  • National Association of the Remodeling Industry
    Links to everything you'd want to know about remodeling -- design ideas, dos and don'ts of contracting, and help in finding NARI contracors.
  • Hometime
    This is the companion web site to the popular program from The Learning Channel. There are several web pages of "how-to" instructional information here, including such topics as plumbing, carpeting, tiling and hanging drywall.
  • This Old House Online
    A web page for the popular television how-to show.

Roofing

  • National Roofing Contractors Association
    This site has links to information for consumers, roofing contractors, related industry links, and the association's journal, "Professional Roofing Magazine."

Woodworking

  • Image of a wood planeWoodworker's Central
    A wealth of woodworking information, including tool reviews, a searchable database of woodworking articles -- even a database of articles about woodworking accidents!
  • Internet Woodworking.com
    A clearinghouse for information on woodworking. Everything from project plans to woodworking shareware can be found at this site. A good web site to browse if you have LOTS of time!
  • The Electronic Neanderthal: Traditional Woodworking Resources on the Web
    A fun site for those interested in older, more traditional woodworking tools -- how to find them, how to restore them, and more. The "electronic" in the title refers to how you find the information, not to how the tools are powered!

New Building Methods

  • Image of a hammerThe Sustainable Building Sourcebook
    This book is an outgrowth of the City of Austin's Green Builder Program, and it's now available free online. The environmentally-minded builder can look here to find information on everything from rainwater collection to nonpolluting paints and carpets. Laid out in sections and chapters like an "actual" book, this is a great resource to browse through.
  • Sustainable Sources
    This website, which is based here in Austin, provides links to a wide range of information on sustainable living, from green friendly contractors to examples of environmentally friendly projects around the world, this site has a lot to offer.
  • Environmental Building News
    An online version of a popular sustainable building newsletter. You can find informative articles plus an index to previous issues at this website.

Web Tools

  • First Source Codes Database
    This site contains a database of building codes from around the country, as well as a cost-estimating database. This site does require registration (which is free) in order to use these resources. Published by Reed Construction Data.
  • WoodBin -- Woodworking Software Central
    In addition to describing a variety of woodworking software, this site also provides links to web-based calculators for bills of materials, figuring board-feet and choosing the right wood for your project.
  • Concrete Calculators (from the Granite Rock Company)
    Handy online calculators for figuring out the amount of concrete needed for various jobs. You plug in the dimensions, and the calculators do the work. (Requires a Java-enabled browser)
  • Cool Tools (from Living Home Magazine)
    An online calculators for estimating the amount of materials you'll need for various tasks around the house. Samples include tiling, grass seed, fences, painting and wallpaper. Visualize This is a program that allows you to design tiles, select wall colors and do other decorating planning.
