Emerging Infectious Diseases is part of CDC's plan for combatting emerging infectious diseases; the plan is outlined in a recently published document, Addressing Emerging Infectious Disease Threats--A Prevention Strategy for the United States. One of the main goals of CDC's plan is to enhance communication of public health information about emerging diseases so that prevention measures can be implemented without delay. Emerging Infectious Diseases is peer reviewed and will be providing information on emerging infections in three broad categories:
1) Perspectives, a section addressing factors that underlie disease emergence including microbial adaptation and change, human demographics and behavior, technology and industry, economic development and land use, international travel and commerce, and breakdown of public health measures;
2) Synopses, concise, state-of-the-art summaries of specific diseases or syndromes and related emerging infectious disease issues; 3) Dispatches, brief laboratory or epidemiologic reports with an international scope."

NCGR, a nonprofit organization based in Santa Fe, N.M., helps solve biological problems by facilitating the rapid evaluation and analysis of a broad range of data....NCGR's specialty is applying bioinformatics and computational biology, which are burgeoning fields merging biology and computer science...NCGR emerged from the Human Genome Project, an international effort to map and sequence our genome. The Center, founded in 1994, is one of two U.S. public repositories for human genomic data, and our efforts are crucial for researchers working in the field. As the Center grew, our work related to the genetics of plants, animals and microorganisms -- in addition to humans -- has assumed an equally important role. The Genome Sequence DataBase is the unique resource that launched NCGR as a keeper of gene sequence data. GSDB, updated daily, provides sequence data for humans and other organisms. Ours is the only public sequence database with full interactive data contribution and annotation capabilities, allowing all scientists to participate in the research dialogue."

"Located at University of Texas at Austin, BioTech is a hybrid biology/chemistry educational resource and research tool on the World Wide Web. BioTech is intended to be a learning tool that will attract students and enrich the public's knowledge of biology issues in the world today. At the same time, BioTech is also a research tool for those already involved in the broad subject of biology. By providing information about resources, as well as avenues for further exploration, we intend to open the doors of biology resources to post-secondary students, researchers, and faculty.
Our mission is to make BioTech as useful a tool to a high school student as it is to a postdoctoral fellow. We aim to educate those who may not have as much experience with biology and biotechnology while at the same time providing quick access to biology-related resources for those who are dealing with much more specific and detailed information. We do not wish to exclude anyone from this project -- we will assist those who need assistance and merely open doors for those who are interested in finding information on their own."
