ASCE History and Heritage of Civil Engineering
The site provides links to various milestones in the history of civil engineering, an audiovisual presentation of the history of civil engineering in the United States, Engineering History and Heritage Links, Monuments of the Millennium, Seven Wonders of the Modern World, and more.
ASME History Center
"Through its History and Heritage program, ASME encourages public understanding of mechanical engineering, fosters the preservation of this heritage, and helps engineers become more involved in all aspects of history." There are links to online historical resources such as the Henry Ford Museum, the Smithsonian Institute, London's Science Museum, the Franklin Institute, Deutsches Museum, the Institute and Museum of the History of Science in Florence, and more, as well as links to other engineering history sites.
Bridge Construction and Engineering Home
Bridge news, project updates, a bridge quiz, and more round out the offerings of this site (launched August 8th, 1999, by BridgePros LLC, Saint Augustine, Florida), dedicated to the engineering, history and construction of bridges. The "Learning Center" features four major types of bridges and a "Build a Bridge" game to test your knowledge by matching the right bridge to the right location.
Component Failure Museum
The Open University (U.K.), Department of Materials Engineering, showcases six types of component failure: metal fatigue, mechanical faults, bicycle components, corrosion, polymers and composite materials. Images can be enlarged to see details. From a list of engineering successes and failures, Cornell University.
ECHO (Exploring and Collecting History Online)
"ECHO is a directory to 5,000+ websites concerning the history of science, technology, and industry. ECHO is also a first step into the field of digital history: since 2001 it has been a laboratory for experimentation in this new field, and it fosters communication and dialog among historians, scientists, engineers, doctors, and technologists."
Get a Grip on Robotics
Online interactive exhibit from The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, CA.
Greatest Engineering Achievements of the Twentieth Century
A collaborative effort of the National Academy of Engineering, American Association of Engineering Societies, and 27 other engineering-related societies.
Historic American Engineering Record
In 1969, the National Park Service, the Library of Congress and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) formed the HAER program "to document nationally and regionally significant engineering and industrial sites" as many structures documented in the 1930s no longer exist. "HAER documentation in the forms of measured and interpretive drawings, large-format photographs, and written histories, is archivally preserved in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress, where it is readily available to the public."
They Made America: PBS program from the producers of American Experience.
Based on the book of the same title, the series focuses on the role of technology in society. Various inventors are discussed, as well as bankers, designers, merchants, etc.
