Medical ethics, also called bioethics or biomedical ethics, affects the daily lives of health professionals as well as affecting all of us at some point in our life's journey. Below are links to information about some of the more common biomedical ethics issues in our society.
General Medical Ethics
Abortion
Be cautious in evaluating the objectivity of abortion sites! Most abortion information on the Web supports a particular point of view. Finding balanced information might be easier with printed sources in the library. Ask a librarian for assistance.
Pros and cons sites:
Animal Testing
Like abortion, animal testing is an issue surrounded by strong feelings. Once again, it is difficult to find Web sources that are balanced. The links below each support a particular point of view on animal testing.
- Altweb (Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing)
- American Association for Laboratory Animal Science
- National Anti-Vivisection Society
- PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals)
- Animal Testing (Pro)
Death and Dying
Hospice
Human Cloning Debate
Medical Records Privacy
Euthanasia/Assisted Suicide
Organ Transplants
Pain
Religious Bioethics
Religious aspects of medical ethics include refusal of treatment, reproduction, organ transplants, and rituals relevant to dying/death/burial, among others.
It is not possible to include links to all religious groups. If you are interested in a particular religion and its beliefs/practices about health/medicine/dying, use a search engine such as Google or AlltheWeb. Use the name of the religion and keywords such as medical ethics, bioethics, medical treatment, or the name of a procedure, like blood transfusion. Librarians can brainstorm with you for the best terms to use.
