Journalism

"Journalism can never be silent: that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault. It must speak, and speak immediately, while the echoes of wonder, the claims of triumph and the signs of horror are still in the air."
--Henry Anatole Grunwald, Time, Fall 1983

General Sites

BusinessJournalism.org

"Seasoned and novice business reporters will enjoy learning about the existence of the BusinessJournalism.org website. Created by the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism at Arizona State University the site was launched in February 2004, and since then it has grown to include a host of instructional materials, including tutorials on how to cover financial markets and understanding financial markets. Along the left-hand side of the site's homepage, visitors will find the "Covering Business" area, which contains helpful articles on writing about the stock market, technology, minority business trends, and business ethics. The site also contains a glossary of business terms, information on relevant scholarship opportunities, and "Dick's Picks", which contains links to recent business stories of note, as selected by the well-regarded journalist, Dick Weiss."  (Review from The Scout Report)

The Institute for Interactive Journalism

"Located at the University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism, The Institute for Interactive Journalism helps news organizations and citizens "use new information ideas and innovative computer technologies to develop new ways for people to engage in critical public policy issues". Visitors will want to be sure to look at the section that provides information about their New Voices program which is designed to support innovative community news ventures in the United States. Of course, those involved in such endeavors may wish to peruse the various grant opportunities offered through the Institute. The Institute also sponsors the Batten Awards Innovation in Journalism, which are designed to reward journalism that uses new information ideas and technologies in innovative ways. Visitors can view current and past recipients of these awards, which include a number of interactive website features created by such organizations as the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and KQED in San Francisco."  (Review from The Scout Report)

Journalism Ethics

Produced by the Department of Journalism, San Francisco State University. A page of links to essays and other materials on ethics in journalism. Not dated.

Journalism.org

"Working together to establish an internet presence, journalism.org is the brainchild of the Project of Excellence in Journalism and the Committee of Concerned Journalists. The Web site effectively serves as a portal and utility for persons interested in journalism, and contains a catalog of tools, techniques and ideas, empirical research, job links, and numerous other helpful materials for the general public, practicing journalists, and journalism students. Visitors can move to any of the site's sections from the homepage, and they will most certainly want to peruse the new quarterly online newsletter that is available. The site also features a number of research reports for the general public, dealing with such topics as Jessica Lynch: Media Myth-Making in the Iraq War, Quality and the Bottom Line and Does Ownership Matter in Local Television News. Overall, the site is a good resource for persons interested in print and television journalism, and will be of specific interest to those studying journalism."  (Review from The Scout Report)

Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas

"Founded in 2002, the Knight Center for Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin was created as a professional training and outreach program for journalists throughout the Americas. During its first year of existence, the Center focused its work on Brazil and Mexico and on establishing a series of seminars and workshops to train journalists from these countries. Other work involves working toward the establishment of an annual forum that will assist various organizations dedicated to journalism training in Latin America. From the website, visitors can learn more about the Center's mission, read about recent stories about journalism in the Americas, and subscribe to a weekly e-newsletter. One particularly valuable resource on the site is the Journalism Studies Directory, which serves as a guide to Spanish and Portuguese language resources on the internet dealing with journalism throughout the Americas, such as associations, fellowships, and relevant digital databases."  (Review from The Scout Report)

The Newseum

The Interactive Museum of News provides online exhibits, tours, materials for teachers, among other features.

NewsLab

"Independent reporting on the world of television and radio is important, and NewsLab works in this area extensively. Along with offering a variety of workshops for journalists and others, their mission includes providing many, many resources for working journalists, those who study journalism, and those who are concerned with the state of today's media. Visitors can look at the latest in related media stories within the "In the News" section, and then move on to the "Strategies" area. This section is particularly nice, and it includes tips on crafting stories offered by Ira Glass and leadership lessons for broadcast news managers. Moving on, visitors can also look over the "Articles" area, which contains pieces on ethics, producing, reporting, and writing. The site is rounded out by a search engine and a place where users can sign up to receive updates by email." (Review from The Scout Report)

Newslink

"
Site re-reviewed in the "Where Are They Now" section of the August 7, 1998 Scout Report: "When the American Journalism Review's Newslink site update was announced, it had recently been expanded to include links to an astonishing total of 431 online newspapers and 466 online magazines. Newslink was one of the earliest sites to foster an awareness of the incredible power of the Internet to deliver timely news. At present, it maintains links to 8,000 "newspapers, magazines, broadcasters and news services worldwide." In addition, the site provides articles from AJR and a jobs database for journalists.""  (Review from The Scout Report)

Paper of Record

"Paper of Record is a freely accessible archive of international newspapers. The site provides digital facsimiles of original newspaper pages for approximately 300 titles. Free registration and Adobe Acrobat Reader are both required to view the images. International in scope, Paper of Record includes newspapers from Australia, Bahamas, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Mexico, the UK, and the US, with Canada and Mexico most abundantly represented. Publication dates range from the mid 1700s to the early 21st century. Some titles include only partial runs; others are complete. Examples are The Sporting News (St. Louis: 1886-2003), Afro American (Baltimore: 1902-1978, partial), Toronto World (1880-1921, partial), Irish Times (Dublin: 1859-2000, partial), and El Informador (Guadalajara, 1917-1968).

Conceived by Bob Huggins as a "global pioneer of searchable newspaper image documents presented in their original published form," Paper of Record is based on the model used to digitize and make accessible the Toronto Star. Created from newspaper collections on microfilm, the archive contains more than 21 million images to date. Updates are clearly marked on the title list. Searching is within one title at a time, for a maximum of five years at a time. Search terms are required; one may limit a search to specific dates, newspaper sections, and page contents. Results may be displayed as thumbnails. Though arranged chronologically, results may be sorted in various ways, e.g., number of hits or section of the paper. Browsing a newspaper by date is possible but not necessarily intuitive--one simply leaves the search box empty. The site also provides brief histories of each newspaper, and registration includes e-mail-based support. Paper of Record is an impressive collection of newspapers from around the globe." Tools for Print Journalists

"An aspiring journalist might ask: "Where can I find some resources on how to get great anecdotes out of an interview subject?" The short answer is this fine site, which was created and maintained by the Committee of Concerned Journalists within the "Tools for Print Journalists" area of their main site. Although visitors can't search the various resources, they can scan through the several hundred resources as they see fit, and there are dozens of great things to look at here. For example, Pulitzer Prize-winning report Eric Nalder shares his tips for conducting effective interviews in the "Loosening Lips" factsheet. Moving on, another resource offers a journalist's guide to the Geneva Conventions. Overall, the site is a very useful resource for journalists of all stripes, and it's one that journalism instructors can also use in the classroom."  (Review from The Scout Report)

Society of Environmental Journalists

"
Global warming, climate change, and other related topics are all covered by environmental journalists. For those who seek to learn more about the profession (or for those who might already be involved in this world), the Society of Environmental Journalists website will be a most welcome discovery. The objective of the Society is "to build a stronger and more closely connected network of educated environmental journalists and editors", and their site is a testimony to that spirit. Here, visitors can sign up to receive the "EJToday" news updates, read their biweekly tip sheet, and also learn about their mentoring program. The Resources section is very much worth a visit, and it includes links to online resources dealing with hurricanes, teaching environmental journalism, relevant blogs, and a work in progress guide "Climate Change: A Guide to the Information and Disinformation". (Review from The Scout Report)

The Pulitzer Prizes
"Archive, history, resources: documenting 80 years of American ...excellence in journalism, letters, drama and music"
