University of Texas Library Map Collection
Outstanding collection of online maps, local, national, international, and historical. Also try the "Electronic Cartographic Reference Resources," which leads to many useful geographic tools, such as gazeteers, distance calculators, time zones, and information about maps.
This is actually part of the above site, from U.T. Library. It lists dozens of links to a variety of map-related Web sites all over the world. An excellent resource.
An interactive map from the U.S. Geological Survey. Different "layers" can be added to view such features as biology, land use, etc.

AtlapediaThese commercial sites all allow users to input data, from general to specific, or to select from lists of places and see a map or written directions. Information on U.S. seems to be most thorough. These are most useful for travel directions, not for academic uses.

Maps from the National Geographic web site. You can select specific places by typing a name in the search box or by clicking on an area and then zooming in. You can select different types of maps also. There are links to additional map resources on the web.

Library of Congress Map Collections
Large collection of online historical maps from the world's largest library. Divided into seven categories or you can search by keyword.
Blank Outline Maps from About.com
Printable maps that just show the outlines of countries and states.
From the U.S. Government. All sorts of U.S. maps. Select the general area you are interested in, such as biology or transportation, and get a list of specialized maps.
Color Landform Atlas of the United States
State maps from satellite pictures. There are relief maps showing geological features and maps with the county outlines overlaid. There are also historic maps from 1895 for each state. From Johns Hopkins University.
Official government maps and census information for U.S. A little tricky to use at first, but a lot of information is there. Be sure to scroll down the page to see all your options.
Google's Directory of Map Web Resources
An extensive list of web sites with recommended maps and map-related information.
This is a list of Web links from Yahoo, which is also a search engine that lets you enter specific place-names or topics and search thousands of web pages or limit the search to just the links being displayed. Be sure to scroll down the first page to see the list of links.
Historical maps, mainly the Americas from 18th and 19th Centuries. Very nice images. The zoom feature is excellent. (It's easiest to use the "Browser" to view, but additional features are available if you download the "Java Client" viewer.)
Geology.com World Maps and State Maps
Has nice "normal" maps plus either satellite or aerial maps. The state maps have many variations, such as political, rivers, highways, etc.
