American Physical Society

The APS "...represents actively its more than 40,000 members in the arena of national, international, and governmental affairs ...publishes the world's most prestigious and widely-read physics research journals...."

Committee on the Status of Women in Physics

"The APS, through the Committee on the Status of Women in Physics (CSWP), is committed to encouraging the recruitment, retention, and career development of women physicists at all levels. Workshops for women physicists provide valuable communication and negotiations training. The site visit program assists physics department chairs in making their atmosphere more welcoming to women. The Blewett Scholarship allows women to return to scientific research after an absence. Publications feature the accomplishments of women in physics and encourage young women to consider physics as a career."

Institute of Physics

"The Institute of Physics is a leading international professional body and learned society, established to promote the advancement and dissemination of physics."

National Society of Black Physicists

A group of African-American physicists met in 1973 at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee to honor Dr. Donald Edwards, Dr. John McNeil Hunter, and Dr. Halson V. Eagleson--three outstanding African-American physicists. NSBP was formally established in 1977. "Among its many activities, NSBP has named Science Ambassadors to give lectures to elementary, middle, high school, and university students encouraging them to pursue careers in science, engineering, and mathematics, with a special emphasis on physics." The organization holds an annual conference and "annually awards a $5,000 undergraduate scholarship (funded by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and renewable for up to four years)."

Society of Physics Students

SPS "is a professional physics association explicitly designed for students. SPS is managed by the American Institute of Physics (AIP) as a service to students and the physics community." The organization provides scholarships, internships and awards for undergraduate study. The Peggy Dixon Two-Year Scholarship, "based on scholarship, potential and SPS participation, ... is intended for students who are transitioning from a two-year college into a physics bachelor's degree program."
