Huge number of frequently updated links to reference sources, on-line magazines and newspapers, maps, news sources, etc. Published by a private company.

Sites selected by librarians and arranged by topics. The "Reference" category leads to encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, etc.

Virtual Reference Shelf
From the Library of Congress. Easy-to-use links to free web sources.

USA.gov
Variety of facts, statistics, forms, maps, and news from the U.S. Government.

Know Play - Reference Search
Very easy to use access to several dictionaries, encyclopedias, quotation sources, maps, and more.

Google's Directory of Reference Sources
A wide variety of reference sources, from general to specific.

Infoplease
An almanac, atlas, encyclopedia, dictionary, and thesaurus that can be search together or separately.

About.com
Covers a wide variety of topics, with specialists creating pages that have background info and links to others sites. Use the general topics list or search for something specific. Tends toward non-scholarly information, but a good place to get background.

Answers.com
Responses to searches come from a variety of dictionaries, general and specialized encyclopedias, and other online sites.

Melissa Data Free Lookups
Dozens of links to find people, places, zip codes, statistics, addresses, etc.

Re: Quest dot net
List of frequently used sources--calendars, encyclopedias, telephone directories, etc.

Who2
Find brief biographical information about thousands of people. Although historical figures are included, it's strongest on people currently in the news and celebrities.

Facts on International Relations and Security Trends
Useful for information on a range of issues. Allows comparison of countries.
